Weather in a Box
Build your own weather, from thermals to snow.
A live weather simulator. The sun warms the ground, warm air rises in thermals, water vapour condenses into clouds, and the clouds rain or snow. Wind blowing over mountains makes waves, downslope storms and clouds in the lee. You can change all of it while it runs and see how the atmosphere responds.

Change the weather by hand
Heat or cool the air, add or remove moisture, and paint clouds, smoke and wind. Raise or lower the terrain to build mountains, valleys and islands, and paint the ground as water, sand, grass, forest, farmland, rock, snow or city.
Choose a landscape
Start from a coast with mountains, an island, a mountain ridge, a valley with a lake, flat land or open ocean. Choose how wide the world is, from a single valley to hundreds of kilometres, along with the time of day, the season and the wind.
See what is hidden
Switch from the realistic view to maps of temperature, humidity, cloud water, rain and snow, wind, vertical motion, vorticity, pressure and turbulence. Place probes anywhere to read the values as they change.
Use real atmospheres
Load a real weather balloon sounding from a station near any place on Earth, or edit the temperature, dew point and wind profile yourself, and see what kind of weather that air can make.
Switch between a slice and a box
The classic view is a slice of landscape seen from the side, with the atmosphere above it up to 20 km. A 3D mode shows clouds building over a whole area, with slices you can move through the air to see what is going on inside.
Stand on the ground
In 3D you can drop a small walker into the landscape and look up at the sky from where they stand, with rain, snow and the sound of the wind around them.
How it works
Weather in a Box solves the equations of a real atmospheric model on your device's graphics processor: an anelastic finite volume model with a multigrid pressure solver, turbulence, cloud physics with rain and snow particles, and an energy balance at the ground with sunshine, cloud shadows and the day and night cycle.
It is made for exploration and learning. The physics is simplified to run in real time and is not a forecast or a research tool.
